Thai government is preparing for rain and monsoons between late September and early October, Government deputy spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek stated on Thursday, September 22nd.
The deputy spokesperson revealed after the meeting of the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) that the office assessed a tendency of increasing precipitation is likely as well as the fact that a monsoon trough lies across the central and the eastern region, resulting in an increasing amount of water in the central, eastern and the lower northeastern regions.
Moreover, about one or two storms are also predicted to enter Thailand which would cause more rain in early October.
The ONWR, therefore, would closely monitor the rain and monsoon situation throughout the current period while related government agencies would prepare for possible floods or overflow in the at risk areas to reduce impact on the public as much as possible.
Ratchada stated: “Related departments were ordered to conduct proactive and preventive action against the floods and overflow in advance. According to the ONWR assessment, the capability of water level of large dams can still contain a large amount of water, especially the dams in the northern part, if the storms battered the country in the upcoming weeks.”
“Meanwhile, the Royal Irrigation Department is working on the drainage process at some large dams which are containing a lot of water at the moment to prepare for the increase of water in the near future. There’d also be an assessment of at risk areas and alerting relevant agencies to manage water in accordance with the situation.”
