Bangkok –

Oppositional Pheu Thai Party is planning to file a petition to the Election Commission, demanding their consideration of the dissolution of Bhumjaithai Party for deceiving the public by introducing a relaxed marijuana policy in the previous election to gain votes.

Pheu Thai leader Cholnan Srikaew said on Monday, October 17th, that the party is requesting the government to consider dissolve all parties related to the marijuana legalization, especially the Bhumjaithai Party, after they failed to issue an effective and practical cannabis policy which led to problematic and unlawful administrative powers according to Cholnan.

The party leader said: “The current policy of allowing households’ to plant marijuana, having dispensaries, cannabis cafes, and cannabis decriminalization had nothing to do with the medical only policy Bhumjaithai Party introduced to the public during the election in 2019.”

“The petition to the dissolution of the party will be submitted to the Election Commission and will be considered in detail in all aspects. The consideration progress is expected to be reported by November 1st.” Cholnan stated.

Pheu Thai has stated on multiple occasions that they do not support recreational cannabis use and want the current grey period around marijuana ended. Some members of the party have called for cannabis to be re-criminalized.

Cannabis has been decriminalized since early June and final laws give regulations to cannabis held up with disputes between political parties. As a result, it is essentially an unregulated industry currently and cannabis is legal and common, especially in tourist areas.
