Srisuwan’s attacker Weerawit to surrender himself to police station this afternoon, receives support from pro-democracy activists

Bangkok –

Weerawit Rungrurngsiriphon, 62, said he would turn himself in to the police on Wednesday, October 19th, for attacking political activist Srisuwan Janya on Tuesday.

Weerawit revealed after the incident that he decided to leave his job at the age of 62 years old before intentionally attacking Srisuwan at the office of Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) on Tuesday. He said that Sisuwan’s actions of unreasonably filing lawsuits against others only because they shared opposite political views was inappropriate.

After filing the complaint against Thai stand-up comedian Udom “Note” Taephanich, Srisuwan then filed a complaint against Weerawit for physical assault shortly afterward.

Weerawit said during a live stream while driving home: “I knew what I did was wrong but I wanted everyone to realize that the true meaning of ‘Democracy’ which was that everyone had to listen and accept different opinions. This country belonged to the people, not anyone in particular.”

Weerawit was found to be a member of the red-shirt pro-democracy protesters and had previously hit former Vice Minister Seksakol Atthawong, or Rambo Isan, in front of the Government House in October 2021.

The 62-year-old attacker said that he would be on a famous live television program “Hone-Krasae” at 11:00 AM. on Wednesday before traveling to the Crime Suppression Division to surrender at around 2:00 PM.

Meanwhile, many supporters, especially pro-democracy activists, donated him money for fighting the case and hiring a lawyer.
