According to the investigation prior to the arrest, Ngakuru had entered Thailand in 2020 and overstayed his visa while staying and running several businesses with his Thai wife in Phuket. After realizing that he was being hunted by the authorities, Ngakuru fled to stay at a rented house in the Samut Prakan province. However, the police eventually tracked him down and arrested him at a shopping mall in the Lat Krabang district.

His identity was confirmed by the New Zealand authorities before being deported to the United States for prosecution and then plans are for him to be deported again to New Zealand for more legal charges.
