An alleged Chinese mafia boss dubbed “Tuhao” turned himself in to Bangkok police on Wednesday, November 23rd, after being accused of colluding in the illicit drug trade and operating an illegal nightclub.

The suspect’s real identity was disclosed by police as Chaiyanat Kornchayanant, who became a naturalized Thai several years ago but is originally Chinese. He reported to deputy national police chief Pol. Gen. Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn at the Royal Thai Police Sports Club in Bangkok yesterday after the Bangkok South Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant on him for allegedly colluding in the illicit drug trade and possessing a psychotropic substance with intent to sell.

On Wednesday morning, police officers searched two locations suspected of being Chaiyanat’s hideouts and only found his Thai wife who turned out to be a police colonel. The wife was cooperative and talked Chaiyanat into surrendering to Big Joke on the same day.

Big Joke confirmed Chaiyanat’s wife was a police colonel attached to the foreign affairs sub-division and a niece of a former national police chief and deputy prime minister. Her name was withheld from the press by Big Joke pending an investigation.

Chaiyanat, or Tuhao, allegedly rented the building which housed an infamous Chinese-run nightclub, Jinling, where police found Chinese tourists taking illegal drugs inside last month. However, he denied all allegations, declined interviews, and said he reserved his defense for the court.

Bangkok police would seek the Bangkok South Criminal Court’s approval to detain the suspect and oppose bail. Big Joke stated that he needed three weeks to properly investigate the complex case.
