Businesses in Phuket are being encouraged to accept more part-time workers in order to help alleviate labor shortages in the island’s tourism industry.
According to Labor Minister Suchart Chomklin, the labor shortage issue is becoming more pronounced as businesses rapidly recover following three years of closure due to the global pandemic. At least 17,000 workers are required to meet demand, with 8,772 employees reported to be urgently needed across 405 establishments.
The Ministry of Labor has urged businesses to offer more part-time jobs to individuals such as students or senior residents. University students from neighboring provinces are also being encouraged to apply as part-time workers on the island. Authorities are meanwhile appealing to Phuket residents working elsewhere to return home to find employment.
Suchart said the ministry will hold a job fair in Central Phuket on December 27 to recruit more people for employment on the island. To guarantee that employment advertisements reach their intended targets, the ministry will start sharing job openings on the island via the Phuket Provincial Employment Office’s Facebook page and the ministry’s official Line chat group.
