Thailand week in review: Top National stories from the past week

Here is a look at the top NATIONAL stories, chosen by our Pattaya News/TPN National team, from last week, Monday, December 12th, 2022, to Sunday, December 18th, 2022. They are not in any particular level of importance but are listed in the order of date of publication.

  1. The Bureau of the Royal Household has announced that Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati suffered a heart problem at a training ground of the Military Dog Battalion in Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima province. The Thai Government continues to ask for well-wishers and supporters to pray for her health nationwide.
  2. Mr. Po Arnon, 30, well known as ‘Sia Po’ was sentenced to 20 years in prison yesterday (December 14th) for promoting online gambling and money laundering.

There was in total 1,760,970,545 million baht (1.7 billion baht) made from financial transactions from online gambling with 841,678,523 million baht in money laundering.

3. The Thai Ministry of Public Health has announced that it will allow the sale of cannabis buds by over 5,000 licensed vendors throughout the nation starting next month. As part of the control measures, however, the vendors’ and buyers’ information will be sent to the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB).

4. The Bureau of the Royal Household announced on December 17th stating that His Royal Majesty the King and Her Royal Majesty the Queen have been diagnosed positive for COVID-19.

They both have very mild symptoms and are not in serious condition.

5. Boats in the southern province have been ordered to remain docked, while ferry services in the Gulf of Thailand have been suspended due to poor weather conditions, according to governor Wichawut Jinto.

The Meteorological Department at 5 AM warned of high waves in the Gulf of Thailand starting on Sunday, December 18th. This led the governor to prohibit all boats from leaving shore from 8 AM on Sunday until a yet-to-be-determined time on Monday.
