Tanker Ship Explodes in Samut Songkhram Province

An oil tanker capable of storing 3 million liters of oil exploded and caught fire while docking in Samut Songkham province at 9:30 AM today, January 17th.

The tanker “Smooth Sea 22” exploded at a dockyard at the Mae Klong river in the Mueang district. The fire had already been brought under control by firefighters from Mueang Samut Songkham Fire Station, but eight dockyard workers were still missing.

Several Thai media outlets have reported at least one casualty from the blast. The cause of it remained unknown, said deputy director-general of the Marine Department Phuriphat Thirakhunphisuth.

The deafening blast was heard as far as 10 kilometers away from the ship.

This is a still developing story and more details may be added if and when released by authorities.
