Chonburi Looks For Ways to Boost Domestic Tourism

The Chonburi Tourism Industry Council has called on the government to extend the “Rao Tiew Duay Kan'” (We Travel Together) tourism stimulus campaign to support domestic tourism, given the imminent departure of foreign tourists returning to their home countries.

Thanet Supornsahasrungsi, acting chairman of the council, revealed that the overall tourism situation in Pattaya, which is Chonburi’s main tourist destination, has improved with an average occupancy rate of 70-80% in hotels, particularly those accommodating foreign tourists from Europe and Russia, which have returned to 100% compared to pre-Covid levels.

Still, about 30% of the hotels, mainly the small ones, have yet to reopen due to financial constraints and a shortage of labor, Thanet stated.

Meanwhile, regarding the ongoing domestic tourism stimulus campaign dubed “Rao Tiew Duay Kan'” or We Travel Together launched by the Thai government, Thanet said it has received a very positive response from the public, as reflected in the number of available rights or reserved rooms, which has quickly gone from 560,000 rights in total to only 134,300 within only a few days of the campaign’s launch.

The acting chairman estimated that the remaining rights will be fully booked within the next two days.

The Pattaya News notes that the We Travel Together project is a popular domestic tourism stimulus campaign launched by the Thai government to boost domestic travel and support local tourism businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project offers about 40% discounts on hotel rooms, flights, and other travel expenses, up to a maximum value of 3,000 baht per person per night, for Thai citizens traveling to designated tourist destinations within Thailand. The project is currently in its fifth phase and will run until April 30, 2023.Thanet said that if the We Travel Together project could be extended, it could further boost domestic tourism because international tourists, such as those from Europe and Russia will soon return to their homelands as part of low season, so the businesses will have to shift their reliance on domestic tourists.
