Thai Airport Police Seize Illegal Drugs Destined for Several Overseas Countries

National —

The Airport Interdiction Task Force (AITF) and the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) have successfully intercepted a large cache of narcotics and prevented them from reaching their destination in several overseas countries.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Sarayut Sanguanphokai, commissioner-general of the NSB, on Saturday, March 11th, revealed the results of a successful operation to intercept and apprehend suspects involved in smuggling illicit drugs through international airports.

Lt. Gen. Sarayut stated that the AITF and the NSB have collaborated to wage war on drug smuggling at international airports around Thailand. Since October 2022, there have been multiple successful seizures of illegal drugs, including 12 kilograms of crystal meth, 11,823 pills of methamphetamine, 1.7 kilograms of ketamine, 5.3 kilograms of cocaine, and 4.2 kilograms of heroin.

These drugs were smuggled into Thailand from Johannesburg, South Africa, and Ethiopia, and they were destined for Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, and Australia, the commissioner-general told a press briefing.

The smugglers avoided being caught by hiding the drugs in commonplace items like kitchen appliances, snack bags, pillows, speakers, or baking powder bags. The crackdown on drug trafficking was carried out in accordance with the policies of the national police chief, Pol. Gen. Damrongsak Kittiprapas.

The impounded drugs will be sent for further examination to designated units such as the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, the Department of Medical Sciences, the Forensic Science Police Office, and the Institute of Legal Medicine.

After that, the drugs will be stored at the Ministry of Public Health for future destruction.
