In a recent development, the Thai authorities have ordered the closure of a factory in Prachin Buri province after discovering signs of a missing hazardous radioactive tube.
The dangerous cesium-137 tube was reported missing on Friday, March 17th, while it was being transported between venues. It belonged to a steam power plant in the Tha Matum sub-district of the Sri Maha Phot district in Prachin Buri province, according to the authorities.
A reward of 50,000 baht was offered to anyone who could provide information about its location or who could find it, said Dr. Surin Suebsueng, the chief provincial public health officer who partook in the search.
The tube was believed to have disappeared well before the previous Friday. In fact, it had been missing for some time. On Wednesday, March 15th, the authorities in Prachin Buri raised the danger level alert in the province to Level 2, indicating that the provincial government needed to take immediate action to address the specific threat posed to public safety by the missing tube from the steam power plant.
On Sunday, March 19th, Governor of Prachin Buri Mr. Ronnarong Nakornchinda revealed that the search team had found the substance in a smelter factory that is believed to be cesium-137. As a result, he has ordered the closure of the factory and prevented all employees from leaving the premises for safety reasons.
No reports of injuries or sickness are available as of press time.
