National —
On March 20th, His Royal Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand gave his endorsement to the dissolution of the country’s House of Representatives, which officially marks the start of the campaign season leading up to the upcoming May polls.
The exact date of the elections is expected to be announced by the Election Commission later this week, with a tentative date of May 7th that was set in September of last year.
Under Thailand’s constitution, the election must take place within 45 to 60 days after the dissolution of parliament, and it is customary for the elections to be held on Sundays.
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha’s decision to dissolve the house early has given members of the House of Representatives more time to switch parties before the elections.
Normally, candidates would have needed to be party members for at least 90 days before the election if the parliamentary term had ended on its scheduled date of Thursday. However, in case of dissolution, the constitution shortens this period to 30 days.
