37 People Injured After Bus to Phuket Crashes in Chumphon

Chumphon –

Thirty-seven people sustained injuries after a passenger bus from Nong Khai heading to Phuket crashed in the Sawee district.

Emergency responders were notified of the accident on Sunday morning (April 2nd) on Asia 41 Road in the Na Poe sub-district.

The rescue teams, media, and law enforcement arrived at the scene to find an overturned two level bus crashed into a power pole on the roadside.

Emergency responders told the Phuket Express that there were 37 passengers including a one year old and five month old baby, a bus crew member, and two bus drivers.

Twenty of the bus passengers including one driver, Mr. Chanai Saenprasit, 56, were taken to local hospitals with moderate to serious injuries while 17 of the passengers who had sustained minor injuries refused to go to hospitals.

The second driver who had sustained minor injuries and asked the media to withhold his name told The Phuket Express that the bus was coming from Nong Khai in the Northeast of Thailand heading to Phuket. He was sleeping while the other driver, Chanai, was driving. He said he heard an odd sound, almost like a bird tweeting, before the bus overturned.

The Sawee Police are continuing their investigation to find the exact cause of the accident for further potential legal action. They planned to review CCTV and interview the injured driver as well as passengers.

This is just the latest in a series of bus incidents involving Phuket, such as this incident in late March in which a bus driver was injured after crashing on Patong Hill. Luckily, no passengers were on this bus.

In February of this year, a mentally disturbed man shot two passengers on a Phuket bus and killed himself, in a shocking incident that we covered here.
