The Court of Justice has warned Thai citizens not to drive vehicles while drunk during the upcoming Songkran festival after seeing an uptick in traffic accidents in the past two years.
As Songkran approaches, many people will travel back to their hometowns to spend time with their families, participate in traditional ceremonies and parties, and take vacations to various tourist destinations, Mr. Sorawit Limprangsi, spokesman for the Court of Justice, said.
Therefore, it is important to plan the trip in advance and choose safe routes, as well as avoid traffic violations, in order to reduce the risk of accidents or losses.
Sorawit said that the Court of Justice recorded accident statistics during Songkran every year, and he found that for the past two years during the 7 Dangerous Days campaign, there was a noticeable uptick in traffic accidents.
In 2022, a total of 17,909 individuals were prosecuted for committing traffic offenses. The most prevalent offense was driving under the influence of alcohol, with 15,608 individuals, accounting for 87.15% of all cases. The second highest offense was driving without a driving license, with 1,274 individuals, accounting for 7.11%. Driving under the influence of drugs accounted for 980 individuals, or 5.47%, and reckless driving accounted for 47 individuals or 0.26%.
“The number of people violating traffic offenses has increased by 3,395 people, or 27.8% compared to 2021,” Sorawit said. “This reflects that drivers still lack caution, which could result in danger to both themselves and others who use the road.”
The spokesman urged citizens to refrain from driving while intoxicated, be considerate of fellow road users, and be responsible members of society. This will help reduce accidents and the number of cases brought to trial.
