The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) is asking passengers not to bring durian after complaints from other users.
The BMTA has posted a message requesting passengers not to bring durian onto buses as it’s now durian season. They said this is according to the Ministerial Regulation for Safety and Peace 2014 from the Department of Land Transport Office which passengers have to follow.
One of the rules states items with a strong smell which can be annoying to other passengers should not be brought unless they are in a sealed, smell-proof container.
The BMTA noted that the rule is not only for durian but also other items with a strong smell. The rule also applies to every kind of public vehicle.
Many years ago, there was an incident where a bus crew asked a passenger to get off the bus. The passenger had brought durian onto the bus and even though it was double sealed the smell still leaked out. The incident went viral when the passenger refused and drew much discussion online, leading to the current regulations.
