Malaysian Woman Still Missing in Chiang Rai Province

Chiang Rai —

Thai police are searching for a young missing Malaysian woman who has been out of contact with her mother for days during a visit to the border town of Mae Sai district in Chiang Rai province, northern Thailand.

Angie Chong Sum Yee, 22, mysteriously lost contact with her mother presumably while travelling in Chiang Rai. She has been out of reach after sending pictures in Chiang Rai to her mother who then posted them on Facebook, urging Thai local police authorities to help find her daughter.

The mother said her daughter visited Chiang Mai alone by air on May 29th. Her daughter took pictures of various places in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai and sent them to her.

The last pictures she sent indicated that she was in the the border town of Mae Sai district in Chiang Rai. The town was located on the opposite of Myanmar’s border town Tachilek.

The mother said she feared that her daughter may be in danger as she might have crossed the border to Myanmar. She denied Thai media reports that her daughter might have decided to move to Myanmar for a job at a casino, saying her daughter already had a sufficient income from working as a cosmetic expert.

The missing woman’s mother and older brother recently arrived in Thailand from Malaysia yesterday, June 6th, in the hope of finding their beloved one.

Thai immigration and tourist police are working with Myanmar officials at the Tachilek checkpoint to look for the missing woman.
