On January 11th, 2024, the Thai Department of Corrections issued an official statement regarding the case of sending Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra for medical treatment at Police General Hospital beyond the 120-day limit.
The Department of Corrections elucidated that Thaksin had been sent for medical treatment at an external hospital since August 23rd, 2023. During the treatment, he was found to have several pre-existing medical conditions, with special attention needed for specific diseases.
Due to the limited medical facilities at the correctional hospital, it was necessary to transfer him to Police General Hospital, which has higher medical capabilities, to prevent potential risks to his life, stated the Department of Corrections.
The medical report indicated various illnesses that require close monitoring by specialized physicians. Considering the comprehensive medical documentation and the necessity for continuous care, the Department of Corrections, on January 8, 2024, approved Thaksin’s continued treatment at Police General Hospital.
The Department of Corrections carried out this decision following the Thai Ministry of Justice regulations regarding the transfer of prisoners for external medical treatment.
According to the regulations, if the period of medical treatment exceeds 120 days, the approval of the Director-General of the Department of Corrections, along with physicians’ comments and relevant evidence, is required before reporting the decision to the Minister of Justice for further acknowledgment.
The Director-General of the Department of Corrections emphasized that the fundamental rights of prisoners are upheld, as outlined by international standards, including respect for human rights related to patient protection.
According to the principles of medical ethics and privacy, consent must be obtained from Thaksin before disclosing personal information to the public regarding his health condition, stated the Department of Corrections.
