Update: Emergency Landing of Singapore Airlines Flight SQ 312 at Suvarnabhumi Airport Results in 71 Injuries and 1 Fatality


At 8:50 PM, on May 21st, 2024, Pol. Maj. Gen. Thanantorn Rattanasittipak, the commander of Metropolitan police division 4, publicly revealed a case of Singapore Airlines flight SQ 312, carrying 229 passengers, that suffered severe turbulence and then had an emergency landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok, causing 71 injuries and one casualty.

According to Pol. Maj. Gen. Thanantorn, after the incident, all 71 injured foreign passengers, suffering from serious to light injuries, were transferred to Samitivej Hospital, Srinakarin, for immediate medical treatment. It was confirmed that one 73-year-old British passenger was pronounced dead from a heart condition.

It was reported that the aircraft encountered severe clear-air turbulence and fell into an air pocket while the cabin crew served food to passengers over the Irrawaddy Basin, Myanmar. Many passengers suffered back and head injuries as they did not fasten their seat belts, according to Thai national media.

Thai officials were coordinating with Singapore Airlines to contact the victims’ families and relatives and provide further necessary assistance.

Regarding the incident, international news media reported that Singapore Airlines issued a statement to express their condolences to the victim’s family and relatives who lost his life. Singapore Airlines also expressed its sadness to cabin crews and passengers who encountered unfortunate incidents and injuries.

Singapore Airlines stated they would provide necessary support, including financial, to the victims. Furthermore, relevant agencies would travel to Thailand to investigate the case thoroughly regarding what exactly caused the incident on flight SQ 321.
