National—

On May 29th, 2024, the Thai Department of Corrections publicly announced the release of Ms. Thantawan “Tawan” Tuatulanon and Mr. Natthanon “Frank” Chaimahabut on bail.

Previously, on February 7th, 2024, 20-year-old student activist Tawan and 23-year-old student activist Frank were detained for allegedly speeding, cutting lanes, and honking during Princess Sirindhorn’s procession on Phahonyothin Expressway.

The police quickly intercepted and arrested them for Lese Majeste.
After being detained for 105 days, during which they reportedly went on a hunger strike for more than 60 days, they were transferred to Thammasat University Hospital. The Thai Criminal Court finally granted them bail.

On May 27th, the Thai Central Women’s Correctional Institution reported that the Criminal Court granted bail to Tawan, who was fitted with an electronic monitoring device before her release on May 28th. Frank was also released on bail the same day.

However, Tawan was temporarily detained by the Metropolitan Police on May 28th for allegedly supporting illegal spray painting on the Wat Phra Kaew wall, related to Section 112. She was released on bail during the ongoing investigation, according to Thai national media.
