Chiang Mai—
On May 29th, 2024, Chiang Mai local media reported that a red kangaroo escaped from Chiang Mai Zoo and was spotted by a driver on the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park road, Chiang Mai.
A viral video, captured at 7:50 AM on May 29th, raised concerns among netizens about the kangaroo’s safety and the potential threat from stray dogs. It was reported that the red kangaroo was a two years and six months old female.
Early in the morning of May 30th, more than 40 officers from Chiang Mai Zoo and Doi Suthep-Pui National Park had been searching on foot for the second day to locate the escaped kangaroo in a one-kilometer radius. Traces of the kangaroo, including manure and footprints, had been found deep in the Doi Suthep forests, but the animal remained at large.
Unfortunately, at 2:30 PM, Chiang Mai officers found the red kangaroo dead in an area below the Huai Chang Khian waterfall, 1.8 kilometers from Chiang Mai Zoo.
Initially, officers concluded that the kangaroo might have accidentally fallen into the waterfall and was unable to climb back up. No traces of bites or scratches from other animals were found, according to National Park officers.
Consequently, veterinarians will perform an autopsy on the red kangaroo to determine the exact cause of death. There is no further information on how the kangaroo escaped from the zoo, noted TPN.
