National—
At 5:30 PM on May 29th, 2024, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced the appointment of Mr. Wissanu Krea-ngam, a former Deputy Prime Minister and legal expert, as an adviser to the Secretariat of the Cabinet.
This appointment sparked social controversy due to Wissanu’s previous role in the government of Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha. Prime Minister Srettha acknowledged his past disagreements with Wissanu but praised his legal expertise and decision-making abilities.
Despite the public’s negative perception of the previous government, Srettha emphasized Wissanu’s extensive knowledge of Thai law and capability in government affairs, which he believes will benefit Thai citizens.
According to Thai national media, Srettha issued an order appointing Wissanu as an advisor to the Prime Minister. Wissanu’s primary responsibilities will include providing legal advice to the Prime Minister and deliberating on legal matters during cabinet meetings.
Srettha clarified that Wissanu’s appointment is not related to the ongoing lawsuit involving Thai Minister Pichit Chuenban.
Wissanu is well known for his almost encyclopedic knowledge of Thai law and was largely responsible for successfully guiding the Prayut government out of many potential legal follies and court problems.
