Thailand Improves Ranking in Muslim Travel Index, Plans to Make Thailand a Halal Travel HUB

National —

Thailand has ranked 32nd among popular destinations for Muslim travelers in the Mastercard-Crescent Rating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2024, according to Mr. Chai Watcharong, Spokesman of the Thai Prime Minister’s Office.

Mr. Chai stated that Thailand has also ranked 5th among non-Muslim countries (Non-OIC), and Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is capitalizing on this achievement by accelerating plans to host events and activities to attract more Muslim tourists.

Mr. Chai said Mr. Srettha aims to establish Thailand as a hub for halal industries in all dimensions, including food, tourism, fashion, and soft power. Mr. Srettha is satisfied with the GMTI ranking and has directed relevant agencies to host more tourism events targeting the Muslim market.

Mr. Chai added that the Muslim travel market is expected to grow significantly in 2024, with an estimated 168 million Muslim travelers worldwide, a 5% increase from pre-COVID-19 levels.

He said Thailand is considered a beautiful country and a pioneer in the halal food and product industry. Since the country already has diverse Muslim communities, it provides a friendly environment for Muslim tourists, Mr. Chai said.
