Surat Thani Police Capture Two Thai Suspects Smuggling 111 Burmese Immigrants

Surat Thani —

At 5:30 AM, on July 11th, 2024, Chaiya District highway police and relevant agencies apprehended two Thai suspects allegedly smuggling 111 Burmese immigrants in a six-wheel truck on Road 41, Chaiya, Surat Thani.

The two Thai suspects, publicly identified as Mr. Anas Poonchalay (33) and Mr. Kuekul Sathongmuang (23), were reportedly hired to transport the Burmese individuals from Sangkhlaburi District, Kanchanaburi, to Hat Yai District, Songkhla. An additional agent was expected to facilitate their further transport to a third country in Hat Yai, according to the police.

According to police reports, the suspects claimed they received 50,000 baht for the task, asserting it was their first time engaging in such an activity, as they usually transported fruits and vegetables to the southern region.

Highway police, while on routine patrol on Road 41, noticed the truck’s top was uncovered, with only the sides covered. Upon inspection, they discovered the illegal immigrants inside.

Some immigrants held passports but lacked legal permission to enter Thailand from Thai authorities. They were taken to Chaiya police station for further legal proceedings and deportation. The police have pledged to investigate further to identify those behind the smuggling operation.
