Chiang Rai —
On July 11th, 2024, Thai-Myanmar Border Patrol Police and relevant agencies intercepted three vehicles suspected of drug smuggling in Mae Fah Luang, Chiang Rai, seizing over 3.2 million amphetamine pills along with two pickup trucks and a motorbike.
Intelligence reports indicated a drug smuggling operation from the Thai-Myanmar border in Mae Fah Luang, intended to transport illicit substances to Mueang Chiang Rai. At 4:00 AM, officers spotted a caravan comprising two pickup trucks and a motorbike heading on Den Ha-Dong Mada public road towards Mueang Chiang Rai.
At a police checkpoint in Mae Korn Subdistrict, the officers attempted to inspect the vehicles. However, the suspects fled on foot into a rubber plantation, allegedly shooting at the officers to aid their escape.
After a 10-minute confrontation, all six suspects managed to evade capture, abandoning their vehicles. Police discovered more than 3.2 million amphetamine pills inside 16 rucksacks left behind.
Further investigation at the suspects’ residences yielded no additional evidence after the findings at the left-behind vehicles, as the suspects might have been alerted before the police’s arrival. The police have pledged to continue their investigation to track down and hold the individuals involved accountable for their crimes.
The identities of the suspects were withheld by the police.
