Thai Forces Intercept Massive Drug Smuggling Operation of 8 Million Units on the Mekong River in Chiang Rai

On July 14th, 2024, Northern border patrol units and narcotics suppression officers revealed that at 6:00 PM on July 13th, Pha Mueang Task Force received intelligence about a drug smuggling operation in the Mae Chan District, Chiang Rai, using boats from the Mekong River.

By 9 PM, surveillance teams reached their designated area in Mae Ngern Subdistrict, Chiang Saen District, and discovered four boats departing from Thailand heading towards Laos. Upon investigation, approximately 10 suspicious individuals were seen fleeing into the darkness.

Thai authorities searched the area and found 32 rucksacks containing a total of 8 million methamphetamine pills. Additional reinforcements were called to secure the area.

The properties in dispute were later transported to the Army checkpoint in Mae Chan, Chiang Rai, awaiting inspection by the Thai Prime Minister during his recent official visit.

Investigations and monitoring of the drug trafficking situation will continue in coordination with relevant agencies to determine the involved individuals and hold them accountable for their crimes.

There are no reports of arrests of suspects involved in the operation as of press time, noted TPN Media.
