Prime Minister Orders Crackdown on Call Center Gangs and Tech Crimes

PRESS RELEASE:

The government has launched a strict crackdown on technology-related crimes, including call center gangs, “ghost SIMs,” and mule accounts. The goal is to eliminate these crimes and protect the public.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has directed this initiative. Chai Wacharong, Government Spokesperson, revealed that the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of cybersecurity in Thailand. As part of this effort, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has already suspended over 2 million unverified phone numbers.

Following the government’s policy, the NBTC has been actively working to eliminate ghost SIMs and mule accounts. They have suspended millions of unregistered mobile numbers and regulated mobile banking services. The NBTC is also collaborating with the police to dismantle illegal telecom signal towers along the borders and to seize unauthorized telecom equipment. So far, 29 cases have been prosecuted.

The NBTC has taken several measures to combat these crimes. As of July 13th, they have suspended 2.14 million unregistered mobile numbers. For users with over 100 SIM cards, 1.09 million numbers have been suspended. While these numbers are restricted from making outgoing calls, texts, and internet use, incoming calls are still allowed.

In addition, the NBTC is working with 21 banks to verify that mobile banking registrations match bank account details, involving 113.56 million accounts. They are also dismantling illegal signal towers along the borders, adjusting or dismantling 1,114 signal points, and prosecuting 29 cases.

In recent raids in Suan Luang and Wattana districts, the NBTC seized over 6,000 unauthorized telecom devices worth over 12 million baht. The Prime Minister has instructed all relevant agencies to continue these efforts rigorously to ensure public safety and prevent further victimization.
