Khon Kaen —
On July 25th, 2024, at 3:00 PM, Mr. Prasert Sipak, 33, arrived at Srinagarind Hospital to claim the body of his father, Mr. Lek Sipak, 70, who was fatally attacked by three American Bully dogs in their village in Phu Wiang, Khon Kaen, on the night of July 24th.
Prasert told Thai national media that he was working in Chonburi when he received a call from relatives informing him of his father and subsequent transfer to the hospital. Sadly, another call came half an hour later, confirming his father’s death. Prasert hurried home to handle the necessary arrangements and bring his father’s body back for funeral rites.
On the night of the incident, his father had been out collecting payment for frogs sold to a neighbor when the American Bully dogs fatally mauled him. Prasert mentioned he had yet to speak with the dog’s owner, who is a local teacher, but planned to do so after the funeral.
In response to the incident, local officials, including Sutthirak Duangtanoy, the sub-district head, visited the site. They met with the dog’s owners, Mr. Sakon, 49, and Mrs. Saowanee, 46, to provide guidance on managing aggressive dogs and preventing future occurrences. Officials recommended clear warning signs and secure fencing around the property.
At the scene, a single-story house with a 1.5-meter-high iron gate, Saowanee showed Thai reporters the three dogs. The attack occurred near the iron gate, where the victim’s red bicycle and bloodstains were still visible on the ground.
Saowanee recounted that she had securely closed the gate with three wires and an unlocked padlock before leaving to shop in the village. Upon returning, she found her three dogs attacking the victim, who was still alive but in great pain. She reportedly managed to confine the dogs and called for medical support.
Despite her dogs never having bitten anyone before, she was uncertain if the victim had opened the gate himself. Saowanee expressed her willingness to assist with funeral expenses, pending further discussion with the victim’s family, according to Thai national media.
The victim’s family has reportedly agreed not to press charges in exchange for compensation and the dogs are evidently going to be given for free to a dog trainer as the owner no longer wishes to keep them around.
