Resorts in Nakhon Nayok Flooded by Sudden Dam Water Release

Nakhon Nayok —

Resorts in Nakhon Nayok province have been flooded by an alleged sudden and unannounced release of water from the Khun Dan Prakarnchon Dam early this morning, August 5th.

Tourists were forced to scramble to escape the unexpected flood that left vehicles submerged and rooms in ruins. However, the Irrigation Department denied that the flooding resulted from a water discharge, blaming it instead on heavy rainfall upstream.

The flooding mostly affected the Hin Tang area of Nakhon Nayok’s Mueang district. A group of Thai tourists at the affected resorts told local media they were asleep in their rooms when they woke to find the water rising and flooding their beds. They quickly evacuated, only to find that the water was already at a waist-deep level, causing significant damage to their vehicles—one was completely submerged.

Meanwhile, resort owners claimed that there was no prior warning about the water release.

Mr. Singha (surname withheld upon request), a 27-year-old resort staff member, reported that the water began flooding the area around midnight, overflowing the banks within minutes. He also claimed there was no prior notice.

On the contrary, Mr. Chuchart Rakjit, Director-General of the Royal Irrigation Department, denied any sudden increase in the dam’s discharge rate. He instead blamed the flooding on rain in the area behind the dam.

He also mentioned that the Khun Dan Prakarnchon Dam had been safely releasing a consistent amount of water since Thursday. The department plans to halt the discharge on Monday to help alleviate the flooding situation, the director stated.
