At 4:00 PM on August 15th, 2024, the Pheu Thai Party held a meeting to officially nominate Ms. Paetongtarn “Ung Ing” Shinawatra, the party leader, as the 31st Prime Minister of Thailand.
Senior party figures, including Paetongtarn, Sorawong Thienthong, Phumtham Wechayachai, Suriya Juangroongruangkit, and Somsak Thepsuthin, gathered alongside 11 coalition leaders such as Anutin Charnvirakul, head of the Bhumjaithai Party, to express their support.
Sorawong stated that following the Constitutional Court’s ruling on August 14th, which ended Srettha Thavisin’s term as Prime Minister, the coalition unanimously decided to back Paetongtarn as the new candidate. The nomination will be presented in the parliamentary vote on August 16th at 10AM.
Anutin emphasized that the coalition’s unity aims to prevent any disruption in government operations. The Bhumjaithai Party is confident in Paetongtarn’s leadership and is fully committed to supporting her policies.
Paetongtarn thanked the Pheu Thai Party and the coalition for their trust, pledging to do her utmost in the role. She expressed respect for Srettha’s work, acknowledging the unexpected turn of events, but emphasized the need to move the country forward.
