The following is our weekly feature in which we highlight the top local stories in our area of Phuket from the past week. The number of stories differs from week to week.
These are chosen and curated by our editorial team and are designed for our readers to get a quick “catch-up” of important stories they may have missed. We publish many stories daily and it is easy to lose track of important events or changes in our area. We do national recaps in a separate article, this is only the top local stories in Phuket and nearby provinces.
They are in no particular order of importance but roughly in order of publishing. These are from Monday, August 12th to Sunday August 18th, 2024.
1. A dispute erupted between Indian tourists and a parasail operator at Karon Beach after the tourists allegedly refused to pay for the parasailing service.

However, no official police report was filed regarding the incident and nobody was injured.
2. Two taxi motorbike riders were arrested after attacking a 32-year-old Kuwaiti man.

The riders have been charged with bodily assault.
3. A man has been arrested after he was trying to sexually assault a female customer who was waiting inside a dental clinic in Rassada.

The female victim, identified only as Ms. B (alias) told the police that the suspect touched her breast and kissed her check.
4. Mr. Suksit Suvundikul, the President of the Southern Hotel Association and Vice-President of the Thai Hotels Association (THA), reported a remarkable 140% recovery in tourism in the south during Q3 2024 compared to the same period last year.

5. A Russian/Canadian man was arrested on Koh Pha Ngan Island after being found asking for food from locals and sleeping on a road, with an overstay of 1,599 days.

Mr. Dmitry informed the police that he holds dual citizenship as a Russian-Canadian and possesses two passports. He entered Thailand using his Russian passport.
