Thaksin Shinawatra Pushes for Debt Solutions and Digital Wallet Initiative

National —

On August 22nd, 2024, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra presented his vision for Thailand at a dinner talk hosted by Nation TV under the theme “Vision For Thailand 2024.”

The event attracted numerous political and business figures, including Thaksin’s daughter, Pintongta “Aim” Shinawatra Kunakornwong, former CP Group Chairman Dhanin Chearavanont, BTS Group Holdings Chairman Keeree Kanjanapas, and other prominent figures.

Thaksin emphasized that while Thailand is aware of its problems, it lacks the determination to solve them. He proposed that each issue should have a dedicated leader responsible for finding solutions, starting with household and business debt restructuring.

Addressing the 10,000-baht Digital Wallet initiative, Thaksin noted that despite opposition, it holds potential to stimulate the national economy, improve public understanding of technology, and enhance access to government services. The plan includes an initial distribution of 10,000 baht each to 14.5 million vulnerable citizens by September 2024.

Thaksin also discussed long-term projects, including the development of a new city in Bang Khun Thian to alleviate congestion in Bangkok and plans to introduce a 20-baht flat fare for electric trains. He advocated for Thailand to become a hub for right-hand-drive electric vehicle production.

Thaksin concluded by urging unity in the government and expressed his willingness to assist both public and private sectors in tackling challenges, albeit with a humorous request for a free coffee drink in exchange for his advice.
