Thai Fencer Saysunee Jana Clinches Thrilling Sabre Victory for Thailand at Paralympics

On September 3rd, 2024, Thailand’s Wheelchair Fencing 2024 World Cup champ, Saysunee Jana, won the gold medal in wheelchair fencing at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, France.

At 50 years old and ranked 4th, Saysunee competed in the Women’s Individual Sabre, Class B. She dominated the early rounds, defeating Brazil’s Monica Santos 15-2 in the round of 16, South Korea’s Cho Eun-hye 15-3 in the quarterfinals, and Ukraine’s Olena Fedota-Isaieva 15-9 in the semifinals.

In the final, Saysunee faced China’s Xiao Long, the 31-year-old bronze medalist from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Despite trailing throughout the match, Saysunee made a remarkable comeback to tie the score at 13-13 before clinching victory 15-14, securing her first gold in the sabre event.

This gold marks Thailand’s fourth at the 2024 Paralympics and Saysunee’s third gold and seventh overall Paralympic medal since 2004.
