Chiang Mai —
On September 11th, 2024, Mr. Nirat Pongsitthavorn, the Governor of Chiang Mai, reported that continuous heavy rainfall in northern Thailand has triggered flash floods, landslides, and mudslides, resulting in three deaths.
In Don Laem village, Mae Ai District, eight people were affected, with three confirmed dead, three injured, and two missing, as of press time. The flooding in Fang District caused significant damage to households and transportation routes across three sub-districts and nine villages.
Nirat urgently ordered rescue teams and all relevant agencies to intensify their search for the missing and recover the deceased, despite the ongoing heavy rain. He also urged officials to prepare for potential further landslides and flash floods in the area.
The situation in Mae Ai District remains critical, with persistent rain, power outages, and disrupted communication due to a lack of phone signals, complicating rescue efforts.
Additionally, flash floods in Fang District affected three sub-districts, with the Mae Jai River overflowing and inundating homes and agricultural land near the river.
Nirat emphasized that all districts should stay vigilant, closely monitor the situation, and be ready to deploy equipment, machinery, and personnel to assist the affected communities 24/7. Residents in need of help are urged to contact the Thai safety hotline at 1784 or the Damrongdhama Center hotline at 1567.
