Chiang Rai —
On September 15th, 2024, Chiang Rai local reporters provided an update on the flood situation. Water levels from the Kok River, which had inundated over 10 communities in Chiang Rai municipality, receded after falling below the critical level of 4 meters.
With the rain easing for the past few days, local residents began cleaning their homes. However, a major challenge has been the lack of running water, making cleaning difficult despite local government efforts to distribute water.
The Provincial Waterworks Authority is working to repair water production systems at three locations in Chiang Rai, including high-pressure pumps and a chemical treatment facility, which were damaged by the flood. Officials are currently drying out motors and expect water services to resume in one to two days.
Meanwhile, low-lying areas near the Kok River, such as Karen Ruammit Village and several communities in the Rim Kok and Ban Du Subdistricts, remain flooded, with some homes heavily damaged. Police were reportedly dispatched to monitor affected areas to prevent theft, while the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office reported that the floods impacted 9 districts, 34 sub-districts, and 153 villages in total since September 9th.
Additionally, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is set to hold a meeting on September 16th to address flood relief efforts. The government plans to establish two committees: one to oversee the operations of the flood relief center, and another to manage the situation and provide long-term solutions.
The initial meeting will take place at Government House in Bangkok to coordinate assistance across all flood-affected areas, according to Thai national media.
