Phuket’s Biggest Stories From the Past Week: Parts of Phuket Again Declared Disaster Zones, and More

The following is our weekly feature in which we highlight the top local stories in our area of Phuket from the past week. The number of stories differs from week to week.

These are chosen and curated by our editorial team and are designed for our readers to get a quick “catch-up” of important stories they may have missed. They are in no particular order of importance but roughly in order of publishing. These are from Monday, September 16th to Sunday September 22nd, 2024.

1. A road in Rawai has collapsed on Tuesday (September 17th) after a flash flood in Phuket on Monday (September 16th).

The damaged road was more than 10 meters wide and six meters deep. A water drain was found under the collapsed road. The road is now still being fixed.

2. Phuket has once again been announced as a disaster zone in which people are currently suffering from the effects of flash floods, as announced by relevant officials.

Twenty-one villages in three sub-districts in Mueang Phuket district are being listed as disaster zones.

3. In total 133 tourists have been rescued after they were stuck on the Racha Yai Island off Rawai.

Of those, 127 are Chinese tourists.

4. In a recent operation, Koh Pha Ngan Tourist Police arrested two foreign nationals for illegally installing CCTV systems on the island. The arrests took place on Thursday, September 19th.

The Phuket Express noted that the occupation of technician is protected in Thailand, and work permits and visas for such jobs are not available to foreigners.

5. A man narrowly escaped injury after strong winds on Thursday afternoon, September 19th, caused a large tree to fall, blocking part of a road in Patong.

An unidentified man, who was nearby, told the local press that he and his girlfriend usually sold fruit at a nearby stall in the same spot. Fortunately, due to the storm on Thursday, they had decided to stay at a nearby house instead of their usual spot.
