On September 27th, 2024, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and her working team visited Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai to oversee recovery efforts after widespread flooding and landslides.
The visit aims to coordinate government aid and meet with local authorities to discuss long-term rehabilitation strategies. Paetongtarn confirmed that the Ministry of Interior has already provided financial assistance to over 3,000 affected families, and further reviews are underway to support additional households within 24 hours.
Paetongtarn thanked the public and private sectors for their contributions, emphasizing that recovery must also include public health measures and infrastructure rebuilding.
Furthermore, Paetongtarn instructed the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) to collaborate with local governors to streamline clearing debris from affected areas and ensure that all zones receive adequate attention.
The Ministry of Commerce deployed cleaning supplies and affordable goods, such as Blue Flag products, to help alleviate residents’ burdens. For other provinces still facing floods, the government remains vigilant, with provincial governors actively participating in the recovery planning.
Paetongtarn ordered the setup of a forward operations center to coordinate with military, justice ministries, volunteers, and private agencies for rapid response, ensuring that efforts continue until the situation is fully under control.
The recovery plan targets a full rollout of compensation and restoration efforts in affected areas by October 20th, with all relevant departments mobilized to provide machinery and manpower. If additional resources are needed, private contractors may be enlisted to ensure the timely execution of the recovery, remarked Paetongtarn.
