Chiang Mai Authorities Implement Flood Prevention Measures as Heavy Rain Continues

PRESS RELEASE:

Chiang Mai Governor Nirat Pongsitthithaworn has mobilized a response team to address the risk of flooding as continuous heavy rainfall in upstream areas, including Mae Taeng, Chiang Dao, and Mae Rim, threatens to cause the Ping River to overflow into urban areas.

Authorities have issued warnings and relocated vulnerable groups to higher ground, while residents have been advised to move vehicles to safer locations. Emergency response units have been deployed in line with the flood contingency plan, and evacuation centers have been set up in safe zones. In addition, clean food and drinking water supplies are being prepared to support affected residents from the onset of the flood.

To reduce water levels, high-pressure water pumps have been deployed, and existing pumps will operate around the clock. The Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organization has stationed excavators at each bridge along the Ping River to clear debris and obstructions, ensuring the river flows smoothly.

A Joint Information Center (JIC) has been established at Nawarat Bridge to provide timely updates. Military, police, and volunteer forces have also been dispatched to patrol flood-prone areas and safeguard residents from potential crimes. Authorities will continue monitoring the situation and coordinating efforts to protect the community.
