Bangkok —
At 9:30 PM on October 6th, 2024, Thai national media reported a road collapse at Kesa Komol Intersection on Nakhon Chai Si Road in Dusit District, prompting authorities to close the area to traffic immediately.
A large sinkhole, approximately 10 meters wide, 5 meters long, and 3 meters deep, appeared near the bridge.
Eyewitnesses reportedly revealed that at around 7:00 PM, cracks began forming along the road, but traffic continued as usual. By 9:00 PM, the road rapidly gave way, forming a large hole, and forcing officials to shut down the Kesa Komol Bridge.
Mr. Nipon Sriruang, the Director of the Drainage System Division of Bangkok’s Drainage Department, explained that the collapse occurred at a bridge section undergoing construction as part of a 2-kilometer canal embankment project for the Prem Prachakon Canal.
Nipon suspected that a ruptured water pipe beneath the bridge caused erosion, leading to the road collapse.
Temporary repairs are underway, with steel plates and asphalt being used to cover the hole, allowing traffic to resume by tomorrow morning, according to Thai national media.
