The following is our weekly feature in which we highlight the top local stories in our area of Phuket from the past week. The number of stories differs from week to week.
These are chosen and curated by our editorial team and are designed for our readers to get a quick “catch-up” of important stories they may have missed. They are in no particular order of importance but roughly in order of publishing. These are from Monday, September 30th to Sunday October 6th, 2024.
1. Two Syrians were arrested at the Phuket International Airport with fake United Arab Emirates passports.

2. A boat captain has sustained injuries after a fire destroyed a tour catamaran off Paklok after 22 tourists were dropped off at the Naka Yai Island.

3. The Phuket Vegetarian festival has officially begun after the Go Teng Pole was raised.

The Go Teng pole is the sign of the beginning of the vegetarian festival which is raised one day before the vegetarian festival.
4. The first day of the vegetarian festival street procession with devotees started at the Jor Su Kong Naka Chinese Shrine in Wichit.
Male and female devotees were seen stabbing their faces with various items such as sharp rods and swords to show that they had relieved the burden of unlucky things and bad karma from people who were waiting for them along the road.
5. A father and his son have survived after a frightening fire gutted their SUV during the vegetarian street procession in Phuket Old Town.
