Dutch Man Assaults Staff Over Misunderstanding of 130 Baht Change in Udon Thani

Udon Thani —

At 1:00 PM on October 14th, 2024, Udon Thani police were called to a local restaurant following reports of a foreign man allegedly causing a drunken disturbance and assaulting staff and the owner in Udon Thani Municipality.

The suspect, identified as Max, 59, from the Netherlands, was seen on CCTV around 3:00 AM the night before reportedly throwing glasses, ashtrays, and two electric fans at the cashier and owner over a dispute involving 130 baht in change, reported the police.

Both the restaurant owner, Ms. Wasitthi, 39, and her cashier reportedly sustained minor injuries, according to the police.

The incident occurred after Max, who had been allegedly drinking with a group, became upset about the money. Max had reportedly handed 1,000 baht for an 870-baht bill. However, his English friend, Lee, jokingly placed the 130-baht change into Max’s pocket, which caused confusion, said the restaurant owner.

Max, unaware of this, became angry and demanded his change, despite it already being in his possession. In his intoxicated state, Max refused to listen to explanations, leading to the assault, according to the local restaurant owner.

Police summoned Max, his Thai wife, the restaurant owner, and staff for a compensation negotiation, but no agreement was reached. Max later requested a review of the damages and admitted to his actions, stating that he would take responsibility. Further negotiations and investigations are pending.
