Sa Kaeo —
On October 15th, 2024, police in Khlong Hat, Sa Kaeo province, were alerted to a fatal head-on collision between a sedan carrying illegal immigrants and a pickup truck on the road connecting Ban Khao Din border crossing, resulting in four fatalities and five injuries.
Upon arrival, rescue workers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation rushed the injured to the Khlong Hat Hospital. The crash left the pickup truck badly damaged in the middle of the road, while the sedan had veered off into a sugarcane field, its front end completely destroyed.
The sedan’s passengers, four Cambodian nationals—including a child around five years old—were thrown from the vehicle and killed instantly, according to the rescue team.
Police investigations revealed that the sedan had picked up the Cambodian passengers from a border market and was speeding when it collided head-on with the pickup truck on a curve. The impact caused the sedan driver to lose control and plunge into the field. The deceased passengers were transported to Khlong Hat Hospital for further autopsies.
Provincial Council member Siripaiboon Wattanawongchai later revealed that the sedan had been pursued by a military task force stationed near the Ban Khao Din border crossing. The vehicle was suspected of smuggling illegal migrant workers, and military officers pursued it at high speed without coordinating with other authorities, leading to the tragic crash.
A further investigation was scheduled.
