Bangkok —
On October 22nd, 2024, Thong Lor police arrested nine Filipino suspects for multiple pickpocketing incidents targeting tourists in Bangkok.
The arrests followed a report filed by a South Korean tourist who reportedly had his wallet stolen in Sukhumvit Soi 33 on October 16th.
According to the police report, the suspects allegedly surrounded him, slowing him down, and then stole his wallet before quickly dispersing. CCTV footage helped police identify the group, leading to their capture at a hotel in the Phaya Thai area.
Seven suspects were apprehended initially, with two more arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport while attempting to flee the country to the Philippines, according to the police. The names of the suspects were withheld by the police.
The suspects reportedly confessed that they came from the Philippines specifically to target tourist areas. After committing multiple crimes, they would split the money and send a portion back to their associates in the Philippines.
Initially, Thong Lor police charged them with nighttime theft, and they are now facing legal proceedings.
