Five Monks Defrocked After Drug and Misconduct Scandal at Nonthaburi Temple

At 8:00 PM on October 22nd, 2024, Bang Srimuang police officers raided Bang Srimuang Temple in Nonthaburi following complaints from local residents. The complaints alleged that monks were engaging in drug use and inappropriate relations with women during the night.

Upon investigation, police discovered drug paraphernalia, including methamphetamine, crystal meth, condoms, and sexual stimulants in one of the monk’s quarters at the back of the temple.

Five monks, aged between 26 and 40, reportedly tested positive for drugs and were defrocked by the abbot. The individuals, publicly identified only as Mr. Anucha (26), Mr. Itthiphon (40), Mr. Kittisak (40), Mr. Saran (27), and Mr. Yutthana (31), reportedly confessed to using drugs.

Police are now investigating the source of the drugs and expanding their inquiry to trace the dealer responsible.

The monks were charged with possession and use of Category 1 narcotics, including methamphetamine and crystal meth, and were handed over to authorities for legal proceedings.
