Bangkok —
On October 28th, 2024, Sutthisan police in Bangkok were alerted to a distressing incident at a convenience store near their station, where a Chinese man allegedly entered wielding a knife.
According to the police, unidentified witnesses said that the man, publicly identified only as Mr. Yang, appeared disoriented as he approached a female cashier around 4 PM, brandishing his passport and using a translation app to communicate in Chinese that he feared being kidnapped for ransom.
Store employees noted that he was unresponsive to men who approached, allowing only women near him.
Police officers arrived within 15 minutes, but the man resisted, injuring two officers in a struggle; one suffered a minor knife cut to his lip, and the other to his neck.
Observing the tense standoff, several bystanders, including a motorbike taxi driver, intervened to help restrain the suspect until he was subdued. In response to reports, one of the bystanders clarified that no violence was used beyond necessary restraint.
The Chinese suspect was subsequently taken to Sutthisan Police Station, where authorities prepared charges of assaulting an officer, resisting arrest, and carrying a weapon in public without proper justification. Both injured officers were sent to the hospital for treatment of minor wounds.
