Government to Urgently Address Low-Quality Imports and Foreign Nominee Businesses

PRESS RELEASE:

Pichai Naripthaphan, Minister of Commerce, recently chaired the inaugural meeting of the Committee on Foreign Product and Business Compliance, established by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

The committee is tasked with swiftly addressing issues of low-quality goods and foreign nominee businesses, aiming for concrete results within 30 days to protect Thai consumers and SMEs.

The committee, comprising 16 agencies, set up two subcommittees led by Deputy Minister of Commerce Napintorn Srisangpang. The first subcommittee focuses on supporting Thai SMEs and working with e-commerce platforms to mitigate the distribution of substandard foreign products. The second subcommittee is dedicated to monitoring and investigating businesses potentially operating as foreign nominees, ensuring compliance with Thai laws.

Discussions with Chinese Ambassador Han Zhiqiang indicated China’s willingness to cooperate on quality control. Minister Pichai’s upcoming visit to China from November 4th-6th will include high-level discussions on trade and investment. Key products like cassava, cattle, and steel illustrate Thailand’s reliance on China, and the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and related associations have pledged support for enhancing trade quality.

Additionally, the Department of Foreign Trade reported that e-commerce platform TEMU plans to register as a business in Thailand, ensuring compliance with local standards. The Food and Drug Administration, the Customs Department, and the Thai Industrial Standards Institute are also intensifying inspections at borders and within domestic markets to block unlicensed goods, regulate labeling, and enforce health and safety standards across all imported products
