Bangkok —
At 9:30 PM on November 9th, 2024, Bangkok police raided a Chinese restaurant on Soi Ladprao 80, uncovering an illegal gambling operation in a VIP room.
The search revealed four Chinese men, all tourists, playing cards around a table. The men, who had entered Thailand on tourist visas, were arrested for illegal gambling.
This raid follows a similar crackdown on an illegal gambling den in Soi Sahakarn Pramoon on November 5th.
Investigations indicate that both operations were connected, with agents using the WeChat app to lure Chinese nationals living in the Huai Khwang and Ratchada areas to gamble.
The restaurant’s Chinese manager, who has been working there for about 10 months, reportedly admitted that the gambling setup, including card tables and equipment, was introduced only 10 days ago by a Chinese acquaintance.
Police seized the gambling equipment and more than 70,000 baht in cash. The four Chinese men face charges of illegal gambling, while the restaurant manager is charged with organizing illegal gambling activities.
In another incident on November 8th, Sutthisan police raided a two-story house in Din Daeng district, arresting 20 people caught gambling.
