Storm ‘Yin Xing’ Poses No Threat to Thailand

PRESS RELEASE:

Advisor to the Prime Minister and spokesperson for the Flood, Storm, and Landslide Relief Operations Center, Jirayu Huangsap, announced that Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai recently instructed all relevant agencies to closely monitor Tropical Storm “Yin Xing.” According to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), the storm is expected to approach southern Hainan Island, China, and Vietnam’s central coast by November 10, where it will gradually weaken. While Thailand is not expected to experience direct effects, increased cloud cover may occur in parts of northeastern Thailand.

Heavy downpours are forecast between November 9 and 11 across Thailand’s southern region due to a monsoon trough, prompting the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) to issue alerts for 14 southern provinces. These include Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun, where flash floods and forest run-off are potential risks. The DDPM has deployed over 1,500 personnel and machinery to high-risk areas, with local authorities conducting emergency drills and preparing residents in vulnerable zones to mitigate possible impacts.

Jirayu also addressed misinformation regarding flooding in the Sai Lom Joy Market area in Chiang Rai, clarifying that recent rain caused only a slight rise in water levels near the Sai River. Water pumps were swiftly deployed, and normal conditions have since been restored, with no disruptions to residents or businesses.

Meanwhile, Chiang Mai province is preparing to welcome tourists for the Yi Peng Festival 2024, themed “The Allure of Mae Rim, Artistic Lights, and Cultural Roots,” scheduled from November 14 to 17. With hotel occupancy exceeding 85% following the city’s recovery from recent flooding, the festival is expected to generate over one billion baht in revenue, supporting Chiang Mai’s economic recovery. The event will include decorative displays along Tha Phae Road, a traditional Lanna parade, and light and sound performances celebrating the fusion of local traditions and Western influences.
