On November 18th, 2024, Nikkei Asia, an Asia News Agency, published an article about Former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra’s speech during a visit to Udon Thani, addressing topics from economic strategy to political stability.
Thaksin called for government measures to encourage Thai businesses to invest in the U.S., citing potential economic repercussions for Southeast Asia following Donald Trump’s return as U.S. president, according to Nikkei Asia.
Previously, Thaksin made his first public speech in nearly two decades, addressing a large crowd of red-shirt supporters in Udon Thani.
Thaksin emphasized the need for diplomatic balance amid growing U.S.-China tensions, warning that Thailand’s trade surplus could attract retaliatory measures from Washington. He also supported Thailand’s bid to join BRICS, seeing it as a move to enhance diplomatic and economic stability.
Addressing Thailand’s struggle to escape the middle-income trap, Thaksin stressed the importance of political stability to foster growth. He warned that ongoing political uncertainty weakens investor confidence and hinders progress toward becoming a developed nation.
Thaksin praised his daughter, Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra, for blending his political experience with modern ideas. He denied directing her policies but expressed confidence in her leadership.
He also revealed efforts to facilitate the return of his sister, former Thai PM Yingluck Shinawatra, from exile, aiming for Songkran 2025.
Yingluck, ousted in a 2014 coup and living in self-imposed exile, has been a focal point for political discussions. Thaksin stressed there are no significant barriers to her return, reflecting his confidence in resolving any legal challenges she faces.
“Yingluck might come back even earlier, depending on the timing and circumstances,” remarked Thaksin.
Thaksin also criticized the legal system’s use as a political tool, referencing his own legal battles. He dismissed the accusations as baseless and expressed confidence in his exoneration.
