Minister of Tourism and Sports Sorawong Thienthong has visited Koh Kood in Trat province to address challenges and explore opportunities for transforming the island into a premier ecotourism destination. With its pristine natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere, Koh Kood holds strong potential to attract environmentally conscious, high-value travelers seeking a premium retreat, as well as those looking for a simple yet high-quality getaway.
During discussions with the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) and local tourism operators, key challenges were identified, including low visitor spending compared to tourist numbers, water shortages, land rights issues, and limited mobile network coverage. Despite travel inconveniences, Koh Kood’s unspoiled landscape, adventure trails, and essential public utilities establish it as a unique and compelling destination. Plans are underway to improve infrastructure and accessibility for both residents and visitors.
The government, led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, is currently considering plans to support Koh Kood’s sustainable development, aligning with the aspirations of the local community. Efforts will prioritize preserving the island’s natural environment while advancing infrastructure improvements and connectivity, all with a strong emphasis on ecological sustainability.
The government is also exploring private sector partnerships to establish air travel options to the island, supporting its development as a sustainable tourism destination that balances environmental preservation with the needs of residents and visitors.
