Chiang Mai —
On November 21st, 2024, Chiang Saen Immigration and police officers in Chiang Rai apprehended a Malaysian monk accused of theft at Jed Yod Temple in Chiang Mai.
The suspect, publicly identified only as Paramasivan, 50, was arrested near Wat Phra Chao Lan Thong in Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai.
The investigation began after Chang Phueak police in Chiang Mai received a report from Jed Yod Temple about stolen valuables. Authorities discovered that the foreign suspect, who had been staying at the temple, had disappeared following the theft. A Chiang Mai court issued an arrest warrant.
During a routine patrol, Thai immigration officers spotted the monk matching the suspect’s description. Upon questioning, he reportedly confessed to being the wanted individual. He was disrobed (defrocked of being a monk) before being handed over to the Thai police for further legal action on charges of theft in a dwelling.
